Expressing the Ineffable through phenomenlogical art

Signs – what is meaning?

The following film was the end result of a project I had worked on in my second year of University for a module entitled: ‘Writing and Devising 2’

Our main interest, as a group, in this project was the use of and perceptions of signs in everyday life. This was an endeavour into our interests in semiotics and phenomenology. What gives something a meaning? The aim of the project was to explore how we perceive signs and to uncover why it is exactly they lead us to particular meanings. We each went away and created a collage consisting of 2-5 signs that evoked particular emotions within us – this could be signs that are seen on the streets of London, ideograms or more abstract and symbolic signs. We got together with these collages and spontaneously recorded our reflections with a Dictaphone, allowing us to explore why we chose these signs and why exactly they had the impact they did on us. We did this individually, one by one. This video is a result of these recorded reflections compiled alongside the relevant images and video that they correspond to. Themes such as love, acceptance, politics, culture and conspiracy are covered with an underlying reason for why they made us feel this way.

Promotions, Magazine coverage and radio interview

As some of you may know, outside the realm of my performance/theatrical endeavours I also have a career in skateboarding. Although the word ‘career’ doesn’t settle well in my stomach – Since I could never see it as a ‘job’. This may just suggest that maybe my definition of the word ‘job’ differs to the conventional one. I thought I would use this post to cover some skateboard related updates that I have gotten myself into. So…

Vans footwear have promoted me to the full UK skate team, so to make this official Vans have released a short online web clip to welcome me to the team entitled Stepping Up. I also have a teampage on the skate section of www.vans.co.uk.

Clip can be watched here

Team page can be viewed here

I recently had advertisement’s published for Dephect Clothing in Sidewalk Magazine issue 141 and 142. You can see this below:

Last but not least. Last week I did an interview for Stroud fm’s The Skateboarding Show hosted by Brett Dye. The Interview covers a lot about skateboarding and my cultural background but also my exploration in the field of performance, theatre and studies on my Modern Drama course. For those to wish to listen, you can hear it on the Soundcloud link below.

‘Kyron Davis x Roots’ – The Roots Collective welcomes Kyron Davis to the family tree

Kyron

Kyron Davis Tampa Profile

Kyron Davis is one of the most positive human beings I have ever had the chance to grow up around. It is also a massive bonus that he is incredible at riding a four wheeled plank (a skateboard, of course). Kyron is the kind of person who sees the light in every situation with a constant positive attitude that rubs off on those around him.

Having grown up skateboarding with this young man over the past 7 years or so, i’ve seen him flourish in his skateboarding. He has constantly progressed in his ability and articulation on a skateboard whilst maintaining a style that is just completely relaxed and effortless.

His sponsors are Nike, Cliche’ skateboards, Supreme and as of now, we at The Roots Collective have taken him on board. Kyron is not only incredible on the plank but smiles doing so. He more than anyone else is aware of the love and passion at the roots for not only skateboarding, but life itself – This is what the roots movement stands for. So to welcome him into our family simply made sense.

To welcome Kyron to the family, Roots and Kyron have gotten together to make a three-minute online web-clip showcasing his abilities and his cemented place in our family.

The following clip was filmed by Toby Hews, Josh Clarke and Xavien Francis and edited together on final cut pro by myself.

Sidewalk Magazine have also announced this on their website. Follow the link below.
