Signs – what is meaning?
The following film was the end result of a project I had worked on in my second year of University for a module entitled: ‘Writing and Devising 2’
Our main interest, as a group, in this project was the use of and perceptions of signs in everyday life. This was an endeavour into our interests in semiotics and phenomenology. What gives something a meaning? The aim of the project was to explore how we perceive signs and to uncover why it is exactly they lead us to particular meanings. We each went away and created a collage consisting of 2-5 signs that evoked particular emotions within us – this could be signs that are seen on the streets of London, ideograms or more abstract and symbolic signs. We got together with these collages and spontaneously recorded our reflections with a Dictaphone, allowing us to explore why we chose these signs and why exactly they had the impact they did on us. We did this individually, one by one. This video is a result of these recorded reflections compiled alongside the relevant images and video that they correspond to. Themes such as love, acceptance, politics, culture and conspiracy are covered with an underlying reason for why they made us feel this way.
